Veteran Pass Program

SolidersSun Metro is partnering with social service agencies to provide free transportation to homeless veterans. Homeless veterans who are pursuing employment opportunities can receive up to 90 days of free transportation.

Sun Metro is also working with social service agencies to provide bus passes at a reduced fare for veterans, who need transportation options. Bus passes are normally $48 per month. Social services agencies may obtain bus passes for their customers who are veterans at a cost of $30 per month.

“These services are the fruition of Sun Metro working with the Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee to provide transportation options for our veterans in need,” said City Representative Carl Robinson of District 4. “A lack of adequate transportation can be a huge obstacle anyone seeking employment. We need to continue to build partnerships to provide more transportation options for those men and women who have served our country with honor.”

Dump the Pump

Gas tank in garbage canSponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the third Thursday in June is known as Dump the Pump Day. It is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car. Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money.

In 2012, gas prices reached $4 or more. Saving money is on everyone’s minds and public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices. According to recent APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $10,000 annually by downsizing to one car.

Each year Sun Metro works to promote Dump the Pump Day through different types of promotions that help spread the word about the many benefits of using public transit, including saving money!
